Application temperature vs service temperature

These specifications are often confused:

  • Minimum application temperature is the lowest temperature at which the label can be applied and form an initial bond.
  • Service temperature is the range the bonded label can tolerate after application.

A label may survive at -20°C after bonding at room temperature but fail if first applied to a frosted container at -20°C. Use the datasheet for the exact construction.

Surface preparation

Adhesives need contact with the actual substrate, not dust, oil or frost. Clean the surface using a method approved for the package. Apply firm, even pressure across the label, especially at edges. Allow the specified dwell time before exposing the bond to stress.

Corrugated board, glass, polyethylene and rough reusable totes have different surface energy and texture. A freezer claim on one substrate does not prove performance on another.

Print method

Direct thermal may suit short cold-chain journeys if the selected media is rated for them. For longer storage or labels handled while wet, thermal transfer on synthetic stock generally provides more options. Match the ribbon to the facestock and test scanning immediately after printing and after cold exposure.

Validation test

  1. Apply labels at the real application temperature to production containers.
  2. Condition them for the supplier's recommended dwell time.
  3. Run the full temperature cycle, including thawing and condensation.
  4. Inspect edge lift, tunneling, tearing and image damage.
  5. Scan each barcode at realistic angles and distances.

Frequently asked questions

Can ordinary labels be applied before freezing?

Why do freezer labels fall off?
