Measure the complete media
Measure the label face and the liner from edge to edge. Printer specifications may list minimum and maximum media width separately from maximum print width. Fan-fold stacks also need a straight, supported feed path.
If the design prints close to an edge, allow for normal media-position variation. Moving critical barcode bars away from the edge improves tolerance and protects quiet zones.
Consider every format
List all labels the printer may produce during the next two or three years. Include returns, shelf labels, product identification and seasonal formats. One 4-inch printer can often replace several narrow devices, but a smaller dedicated printer may use less bench space and lower-cost media.
Width and ribbon
For thermal transfer, ribbon should generally cover the media width as specified by the printer manufacturer. Ribbon that is too narrow can leave part of the printhead rubbing directly against the more abrasive label surface, contributing to wear.
Width is not resolution
Print width describes the horizontal physical area. Resolution describes dot density. A 4-inch 300 dpi printer is not wider than a 4-inch 203 dpi printer; it simply places more dots within each inch.
