Heat exposure
Direct thermal chemistry intentionally darkens with heat. A closed vehicle, heater, hot conveyor or warm appliance can activate large areas. Store rolls in their original packaging under the supplier's specified conditions and keep them away from direct sunlight.

Rapid rubbing creates heat. Tight packaging, dragging labels across rough guides or heavy stacking pressure can mark the surface. Inspect the media path for sharp edges and contamination.
Printer settings
Excessive darkness applies more energy than necessary. Confirm that the printer is set to direct thermal mode and use the lowest darkness that produces acceptable barcode quality. Clean the printhead before increasing heat to compensate for weak output.

Can a blackened label be restored?
